Hurricane Preparedness for Business: Why Planning Ahead Matters

As hurricane season ramps up here in Florida, businesses are being reminded that preparation is not optional, it is critical. Every year, companies get caught off guard by storms that disrupt operations, damage property, and delay recovery. The difference between those that bounce back quickly and those that struggle often comes down to planning.

From my experience, preparedness starts before the season even begins. Businesses should already be reviewing assets, updating inventories, and confirming insurance coverage. For companies that rely on vehicles, this means knowing exactly what you have, where it is located, and its condition. Taking photos and keeping updated records might seem minor, but it becomes a big deal when filing claims.

Another important factor is having a clear response team. You cannot wait until a storm is days away to decide who is in charge. Roles should already be assigned, with everyone trained on communication and decision making so there is no confusion.

When a hurricane is tracking toward your area, businesses need to act early. Employees should be notified, and companies with fleets should begin relocating vehicles to safer locations. As the storm gets closer, everything should be secured, including fueling vehicles, moving assets to higher ground, and documenting conditions with photos.

After the storm, safety comes first. Once employees are accounted for, businesses should assess damage, compare documentation, and begin the claims process quickly.

At the end of the day, you cannot control the storm, but you can control how prepared you are. Businesses that plan ahead protect their people, their assets, and their ability to recover.
