New Rebate Program Rewards Homeowners for Making Water Wise Upgrades to Their Irrigation System

Inefficient irrigation systems can waste thousands of precious gallons of water — and drive-up monthly utility bills. Now, Tampa Water Department customers have a chance to take control of both, thanks to a new rebate pilot program.

Efficient irrigation is key to keeping the City’s water demand down. The Tampa Water Department produces an average of 82 million gallons of water each day, and a significant amount of that water goes to irrigating lawns. According to the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at least 50% of Florida household water usage is for irrigation. By making water-efficient upgrades and fixing irrigation issues, Tampa residents can save water, reduce their monthly utility costs, and protect vital water resources.

We understand homeowners want a healthy, well-maintained lawn. That’s why the Water Department provides expert advice, tools, and guidance, so that homeowners are making the most of out every drop,” said Mayor Jane Castor.

The newly launched sprinkler system rebate rewards homeowners who make water-smart upgrades to their existing irrigation systems.

Here’s how it works:

  • Homeowners contact a participating, licensed irrigation contractor. The list of approved irrigators can be found at TampaBayWaterWise.org/Sprinklers
  • The contractor evaluates the system and recommends eligible efficiency upgrades.
  • After the work is completed, residents submit a rebate form and supporting documents online.
  • To get the rebate, homeowners must submit all forms by September 30, 2025.

Customers can get money back for installing or repairing a rain sensor, installing high-efficiency rotary nozzles, and capping irrigation heads. Homeowners who participate in the program can receive a minimum rebate of $50, with the potential for much more depending on the water-saving improvements made. This program encourages Tampa Bay homeowners to check and upgrade their sprinkler systems by offering rebates that make it easy to save water, reduce costs, and still enjoy a healthy, beautiful landscape,” said Amelia Brown, Demand Management Program Manager at Tampa Bay Water.

The rebate is being offered by Tampa Bay Water Wise, a regional water conservation program through Tampa Bay Water for customers in Tampa as well as Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas counties and the cities of St. Pete and New Port Richey. The Tampa Water Department works closely with Tampa Bay Water Wise to help our customers reduce their water usage and save money. The program is co-funded by the Southwest Florida Water Management District.
